About TapTheMap
TapTheMap is a free map game about Europe's places and stories. Instead of naming countries on a map, you read about something that happened, or something that stands somewhere, and tap where you think it is.
Why we made it
Most map quizzes ask you to click on a country or a capital. That tests the outline of a map, not what you know about the places on it. We wanted a game where knowing that the Treaty of Versailles was signed in the Hall of Mirrors, or that the Hahnenkamm race runs down a mountain in Kitzbühel, actually earns points, and where getting close counts even if you are not exactly right.
Scoring by distance does that. A guess in the right country is worth a lot; a guess in the right valley is worth nearly everything. Each answer comes with a short fact, so every round teaches you something, whether you scored 900 points or 90.
The questions
Questions cover five themes: landmarks, history, sport, culture and nature. There are more than 1,800 of them, written by hand, enough for a new daily challenge every day for a year without repeating one.
Every answer has precise coordinates, and every location is checked automatically against real country borders before it goes into the game, which catches swapped latitude and longitude or a pin placed in the wrong country. If you still find a mistake, please tell us.
A daily question only becomes available in category rounds after its day has passed, so nobody can see tomorrow's daily in advance.
No account, no clutter
You can play without signing up. We do not ask for an e-mail address or any personal information. The only thing you can choose to share is a nickname for the leaderboard. Details are in our privacy policy.
The game is funded by advertising. Ads appear on the home page and on the results screen, never on the map while you play, so they don't get in the way of a round.
